Altrincham ‘Lights Up’ for Christmas

Christmas in Altrincham got off to a spectacular start last Saturday 19th November with a magnificent lantern parade through the town. Hundreds turned out to watch the procession of music and more than 100 magical lanterns as they made their way from Altrincham Market to the Stamford Quarter, to well and truly declare Christmas in Altrincham. 

There are now ninety additional parking spaces available at Oakfield Road car park in Altrincham, less that a 10 minute walk to the centre of town, following the demolition of Oakfield House.

The area, previously taken up by the building, has been made suitable for use as car parking, adding to the number of spaces available at Oakfield Road.

The new parking tariffs were introduced in April followi ng a consultation with residents, local businesses and key groups and are designed to support local businesses in the borough's town centres. Feedback from the consultation showed consultees were in favour of a low initial charge to encourage people to make better use of the town centres and that all day parking prices in off-street car parks should be increased slightly.

The charges are now 10p for one hour, 30p for two, 70p for three hours and all day at £3.

Executive Councillor Alan Mitchell said:

"There has been a positive response to our new parking tariffs and I am delighted that there is now even more space for people to park to shop and visit Altrincham."

A BIT OF GOOD NEWS FOR CHRISTMAS SHOPPERS IN ALTRINCHAM

'Free after three' back for Christmas and now includes Saturday

The Council's Free after 3pm parking scheme is being reintroduced for two months to cover the Christmas and New Year period.

From 18 November until 16 January in ALL Council-run car parks and on-street parking facilities Monday to Saturday.

Car parks and on-street parking places are also free on Sundays.

Executive Councillor Alan Mitchell said: "We recognise that the run-up to Christmas is one of the most important times of the year for retailers and want to demonstrate our support for local traders. We know there is a lot on offer for shoppers and visitors in our town centres and we hope they will make the most of this free Council initiative. Whilst there have been lots of discussions in relation to long-term parking measures we felt it was vital to get something in place now to support our traders at this important time of year."
